Sample project 1: USB Charging Indicator
A 5 V USB port powers a charging-status indicator circuit: a red LED lights up for “charging” and a green LED lights up for “full”, selected with a switch.
Requirements
- Calculate the current-limiting resistor for each LED so the current is in the range 10–20 mA, based on the LED forward voltage (red 2.0 V; green 2.2 V).
- Choose the nearest standard resistor value and a suitable power rating.
- The error between calculation and simulation must be under 5%.
- Faults to create and fix: one LED connected backwards; one branch missing its current-limiting resistor.
Level: Basic · Module applied: EC1001 · Team time: about 4 hours
This is a worked sample project: go through all the steps to see how a team does a project, then apply it to your own team's topic.
