Sample project 4: Automatic Hallway Light
A voltage divider made of a fixed resistor and a light-dependent resistor (LDR) controls an LED; an NPN transistor works as an electronic switch: when it gets dark, the light turns on by itself.
Requirements
- Choose the fixed resistor so the divided voltage is high enough at night and low enough during the day.
- Make a table of the output voltage at 3 light levels; explain your choice.
- Faults to create and fix: a wrong resistor value in the voltage divider; an open LDR.
Level: Intermediate · Modules applied: EC1002, EC1003 · Team time: about 5 hours
This is a worked sample project: go through all the steps to see how a team does a project, then apply it to your own team's topic.
